Changing Our Thinking in 2009

I want to challenge you to change your thinking this year. What we think about life, our finances, our jobs, our ministries, our friends, our families but most of all what we think about ourselves.

Alice Smith of Eddie & Alice Smith Ministries says “We are never unemployed: we’ll always have the job of being our minds gatekeeper.”

The scriptures says in Ps. 94:19 that we have a multitude of anxious thoughts with in us. It also says in 2 Cor. 10:5 that we need to take every thought captive…to take control of our thinking.

I received a newsletter from Alice Smith this past week. In this newsletter she says that the words of our mouth (what we say to others) the meditations of our hearts (what we say to ourselves) and the words of others (what we listen to) will eventually establish what we believe, how we behave and who we will become.

We determine what we allow ourselves to see, hear & think. We must learn God’s Word if we intend to challenge and capture thoughts that are contrary to His will and bring them in line with Scripture.

Our attitude affects our relationships with God and others. It eventually affects our mental, emotional, and even our physical health. Dwelling on rejection, failure and unforgiveness will produce mental and physical illness and disease. Why? It’s because it contributes to the level of our stress. Some people stuff their stress, quietly bearing it. Others shout their stress outwardly venting it.

Proverbs 3:5-8 in the Message Bible – “Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He is the one who will keep you oin track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health; your bones will be vibrate with life!”

* 10% of what makes us who we are is what we experience
* 90% of what makes us who we are is how we respond to that experience

If we add thoughts of rejection, worthlessness and unforgiveness to life’s common pressures like a “bad hair day”, a “blue monday”, parenting problems, job challenges or bumper to bumper traffic…we will strengthen negative strongholds within.

She asked that we start 2009 by answering these questions:

1. Do I constantly question God’s love for me?
2 Do I tend to question the motives, sincerity and intentions of others?
3. Do I do this unconsciously to the point that they feel rejection from me?
4. Do they sense this because of my subtle behaviors and body language?
5. Do I refuse to accept or try new challenges because I fear failure?

The rejection-cycle;
We are rejected by someone we love and from whom we expect to receive love. In turn, we reject those who really do love us and want the best for us. This results in cycles of attracting negative non-achievers to ourselves. When corrected we abandon our dreams for the future and all plans for ministry opportunites.

Our responses compromise our ability to experience and to express victory. What we don’t recognize, we can’t receive. What we can’t receive, we’ll never experience. What we’ve not experienced, we can’t express. Without renewing our minds (Romans 12:2) sadly the cycle will continue.

If you reject yourselves as a beloved child of God and refuse to respect the gift that He’s made you to be, you’re simply not sinning against yourself but you are actually judging God’s creation!

Psalms 139:13-14 (Message Bible) “Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I think you, High God, You’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made! I worship in adoration – what a creation!”

Few things determine other people’s opinion of us as will our opinion of ourselves! To move from negative to positive self-talk, we must shake free from the shame, guilt (real or false) and the reproach of our past. We must learn to appreciate who we are and why God made us. God loves us as we are. He loves us when we are right and when we are wrong. We can never escape His love. Re-evaluate your self-talk and recommit to believe God’s talk.”

  1. Hi Martha~Such a good post… those questions are really good ones to ask myself. I love this part,“What we don’t recognize, we can’t receive. What we can’t receive, we’ll never experience. What we’ve not experienced, we can’t express.”he he, I have MUCH to express, but for me, it is getting to the place of “wholeness” so that my expressions are edifying and loving to myself and others.hugs friend!xoxoAnalise
