The Chronicles of Elijah – Part 2
I Kings 18
v.1) After many days, the Word of the Lord came to Ellijah, in the third year, and said, “Go show yourself to Ahab and I will send rain upon the earth.
Elijah had a choice to make…would He believe God? Would He take that step and go where God had told him to go? He had seen God move before but could he believe that it would rain after three years? Okay, God, I’m going to trust You…so, off Elijah went not really knowing what was about to happen!
When Ahab saw Elijah, he said “Are you the one that troubles Israel?” Elijah in his boldness answered, “I have not troubled Israel.” You and your fathers house have by forsaking the commandments of the Lord and by following Baal.
Ahab sent for all the children of Israel and the prophets and gathered them together on Mt Carmel. Then Elijah came to the people and said “How long will you halt between two opinions” If God be God, follow Him! If Baal is God follow him! The people answered not a word!
James 1:6-8 says that a man of two minds is unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything he thinks, feels or decides. If you hesitate and doubt God – it says that man will not receive anything from the Lord.
Elijah wanted to prove that God is the only God. He could not afford to be doubleminded. He began to put out a challenge to the prophets of Baal. He said this is what we are going to do! He gathered wood and two bulls. He cut the bulls up and layed them on the wood. He made two stacks – one for them and one for himself. He said, “You call on your God and I will call on my God and we will see who answers by fire.”
So, the prophets of Baal cried out from morning until noon with no answer. They danced around the altar they had made and even cut themselves until blood gushed out. Evening came – still no answer!
Then Elijah said – come near to me. He prepared his altar, put the wood in order and dug trenches around the altar. He poured water over the wood, once, twice, three times – to soak the wood.
v.37) Hear me, O God, that these people will know that you are God. Then the fire fell and consumed the sacrifice.
v.39) When all the people saw it they fell on their faces and said, The Lord is God! The Lord is God!!
When we trust God to show Himself strong on our behalf…He will! When He does… let those things be a testimony to others how faithful God is to you!
Elijah said”Thank you, Lord, I knew that You could do it” but now, what about the rain? He was really excited after what had just happened and He said to Ahab…Go up, eat and drink for I hear the sound of an abundance of rain..(remember it had not rained in three years) He knew God would answer because He had told him to go to Ahab and He would cause it to rain. So, he spoke it out and proclaimed it in faith. He had heard the sound in his spirit.
He went to the top of the hill and bowed himself down with his face betwen his knees and prayed. Then he said to his servant “Go look toward the sea” The servant looked and said “I see nothing”. Elijah said, Go again! He went again but saw nothing. Elijah said, Go again! The servant did this seven times. After the seventh time he came back and said, I see a cloud the size of a man’s hand…
Praise God! Finally! Elijah was so confident that it was going to rain that he said to the servant, Go, hurry – before the rain stops you. You have to go tell Ahab!
v. 45) In a little while the heavens were black with clouds and there was a great rain!!
Would you have gone up the mountain seven times or would you have given up after the 4th, 5th or 6th time? Sometimes we give up right before our miracle or breakthrough…when the Lord is saying, don’t give up yet…just one more time!
If you are believing God for something today…keep trusting Him to do what He said He would do!
