Lord, help me to be still and know that You are God!

The Chronicles of Elijah part 3

I Kings 19:1-15

Elijah had just witnessed a great miracle but now he was in depair of his life. All of a sudden fear came upon him and he was afraid of Jezebel (Ahab’s wife) because she was threatening his life. He was afraid, discouraged and he felt alone. He ran away from her and hid in the wilderness. He was so discouraged that he didn’t care if he lived or died. He sat under a Juniper tree – ready to give up and then he fell asleep…

O Lord, you have searched me and have known me. You know my downsitting and my uprising; you understand my thoughts afar off. You sift and search out my path and my lying down and you are aquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue (still unuttered) but behold, O Lord, You know it altogether. Psalm 139:1-4

An angel of the Lord appeared and said Arise, eat! He looked and there was a cake and some water laying near his head. He ate and drank and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time and said Arise and eat for the journey is great. So, he arose and ate and drank. He went in the strength of that food for 40 days and nights…

Be strong in the Lord, be empowered through your union with Him ; draw your strength from Him – that strength which His boundless might provides. Ephesians 6:10

Then he came upon a cave and lodged there. The Word of the Lord came to him and said “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

He knows exactly where you are…David said in Psalm 139:7 – Where could I go from Your Spirit or where could I flee from Your presence?

Elijah answered, the Israelites have forsaken Your covenant, thrown down Your altars and killed Your prophets…I am the only one left and they seek my life.

Have you ever felt like that…so alone that you feel as though you are the only one going through any trials? The enemy will isolate you and bring fear upon you. You have to immediately cast down those imaginations… 2 Timothy 1:7 says He has not given a spirit of fear but He has given you a spirit of power, love and a sound mind.

The Word of the Lord came again and said, Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord for the Lord is about to pass by. So, he went out. He so desperately needed to hear the Lord speak to him.

A great and strong wind came tearing the mountains apart…is that You, Lord, speaking through the howling winds? No, the Lord was not in the wind.

The earth began to shake and tremble…is that You, Lord, speaking through the earthquake? No, the Lord was not in the earthquake.

Then there arose a crackling, blazing fire comsuming everything in its path…is that You, Lord, speaking through the fire? No, the Lord was not in the fire.

After the fire – there was a still small voice…is that You, Lord?

And the word said that Elijah heard God speak…he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out – stood in the entrance to the cave and waited…

Sometimes God doesn’t speak to us in the way we are expecting Him to. He does speak through the noise but through that noise you have to be willing to listen very closely with all you heart. He wants you to “Be still and know that He is God” Psalm 46:10. Know that He is God over all your circumstances. He is God over your greatest fear. He is God over your provision. He is God over your destiny.

Take time today to be still and know that He is God!!
